Swimming Pool Halls Ventilation

Ventilating a swimming pool hall is one of the most demanding tasks in HVAC design – high humidity, elevated temperature, and constant water evaporation quickly lead to condensation on the walls, damaged finishes, and corroded metal structures if the system isn’t right. Even under optimal conditions – a temperature of 26°C and 50% humidity – around 220 g of water vapour is released per square metre of water surface every hour. In Warsaw and the surrounding area, where pool halls operate year-round, a well-designed ventilation system isn’t an extra – it’s what keeps the building in good condition long-term.

Below are the solutions we most commonly use when ventilating swimming pool halls.

Sports and home pools

For rooms with a large pool, it’s best to install a ventilation system with an air dehumidification function. Since these are modular units, it’s easy to find the right equipment for any pool hall.

A key feature of large pool rooms is that maintaining stable climate parameters requires a system combining heating and cooling, dehumidification, and heat-recovery air filtration. These sections are installed in a dedicated ventilation chamber, and automation together with sensors keeps the microclimate within set limits all year round.

Because of their large size, these systems are installed in separate technical rooms, and a full duct network is needed for them to work properly. Using a modular unit reduces the load on the system and heating costs, and since the ventilation system also handles cooling, there’s no need to install separate air conditioning.

Separate supply and exhaust systems

In some cases, supply and exhaust ventilation systems are installed separately. They’re similar to the ones used in residential buildings, except they need an automatic humidity control function.

The supply unit consists of an air intake with a valve – which prevents cold air from entering the room – along with a fan, filter, and heater that clean and warm the incoming air.

The exhaust ventilation system is built around a fan that removes all the exhaust air through the exhaust ducts.

Supply and exhaust ventilation system

The amount of air exchange required in a pool hall depends on the season, since humidity levels outside and inside the building change accordingly – less air needs to be supplied in winter than in summer. Kliwenta’s specialists recommend variable recirculation in these cases, which removes excess moisture by adjusting the air supply alone.

Proper air distribution is the key condition for a well-functioning ventilation system. Moist air rises while dry air sinks, so moist air is extracted from the upper zone of the room. The supply air stream should be directed along the windows and walls – this reduces the risk of condensation and makes temperature control easier.

In buildings with a glass roof, supply air should be directed along its surface, with extraction on the opposite side from the air intake.

Supply and exhaust ventilation with air dehumidifiers

This setup costs more to buy but is more cost-effective in practice than installing separate dehumidifiers, since it reduces energy consumption. Dehumidifiers are placed evenly around the room, either wall-mounted or recessed. The principle is simple: moist air enters the dehumidifier, condensate is drained through the drainage system into the sewer, and low-humidity air returns to the room.

Dehumidifiers help maintain proper ventilation, eliminate unwanted odours, and guarantee a supply of fresh air, since they only operate in recirculation mode. For this reason, we recommend installing dehumidifiers together with a supply and exhaust ventilation system.

Because energy consumption in this setup is low, it also works well in single-family homes – in rooms that contain a swimming pool.

Recommended microclimate parameters for pool halls are set out, among others, in the German VDI 2089 guideline, widely used across Europe when designing this type of installation – it calls for air temperature 1-2°C above the water temperature and relative humidity in the 50-64% range, which limits evaporation and the risk of condensation.
