Air conditioning for restaurants

Building code requirements for rooms where people are present are quite strict. However, regardless of how you look at it, restaurant owners must comply with them to ensure optimal conditions for both their customers and employees. For instance, humidity parameters must range from 50% to 60%, air velocity from 0.1 to 0.15 m/s, and acceptable temperatures from 15 to 18°C. Oxygen saturation in the air must be no less than 21%, and carbon dioxide levels must not exceed 0.3%. Maintaining these parameters is not possible without a proper air conditioning and ventilation system.

Depending on the size of the dining establishment and its unique characteristics, suitable equipment is chosen to ensure a comfortable microclimate in customer dining rooms, kitchens, technical areas, and administrative spaces. Split systems are recommended for small cafes and restaurants. They can be cassette, conventional, floor-ceiling, or ducted systems. For larger restaurants, industrial air conditioners are appropriate.

Restaurants and Cafes: Split Systems

When installing modern split systems, the air conditioning unit is mounted under the ceiling. In this case, it does not disrupt the overall appearance of the room. Given the high efficiency of such a device, the room where it is installed has no areas where air does not circulate.

Ducted split systems are installed under a suspended ceiling along with air ducts. The advantages of such systems are that they allow simultaneous air cooling in multiple rooms, operate quietly, provide fresh air from outside, and do not create drafts. This eliminates the need to install a separate ventilation system.

Cassette split systems operate on the principle of four-way air flow under the ceiling. The air flow rate can be adjusted based on needs. The airflow is even, so there are no drafts in the room. Cassette split systems are an excellent solution for restaurants with an unusual layout.

If it is not possible to install a wall-mounted air conditioner or if there are no suspended ceilings in the room, floor-ceiling air conditioners are installed. When the unit is mounted on the ceiling, the air stream is directed along it, and when on the floor, it is directed upward. This type of air conditioner helps create a comfortable microclimate for all restaurant guests.

Multi-split Systems for Large Restaurants and Cafes

Multi-split systems are recommended for restaurants or other dining establishments with multiple rooms. They consist of an outdoor unit and multiple indoor units, with the number of indoor units reaching up to 50. Depending on the venue’s specific needs, the customer can choose from various indoor units. These air conditioners are particularly relevant in cases where it’s not possible to install multiple outdoor units on the building’s facade.

Kliwenta experts recommend noting that in the kitchen, it is necessary to install special range hoods, and the dining area should have a continuous supply of fresh air. Therefore, a split system is not a comprehensive solution to the air conditioning and ventilation needs of a dining establishment. It is also mandatory to install a supply and exhaust ventilation system. It’s advisable to address this issue during the construction stage.
